Going by the overwhelming response from the locals to any of the sundry Fashion Weeks being hosted across various towns in India, we must be the most fashion conscious people.. Some of the fashion ‘weeks’ are only over two days or just an evening, defying logic why this event is called a ‘Week’.

We decided to rate the 14 designers who showed at the fifth edition of the Pune Fashion Week 2014, that was held from 19th to 21st December 2014. The overall standard of the collections and creativity kept the audience of this burgeoning tech city enthralled. The model contingent comprised 32 female and 20 male, who are the best in the business, with choreographers Alison Woodham and Ajay Bist keeping the show tempo revved up. Celebrities from Bollywood and TV serials were show stoppers for designers adding that extra touch of glitz and glamour. The Pune Fashion Week, which was held at the amphitheatre in Ishanya, seems to be steadily moving in the right fashion direction.

An interesting blend of fusion and ethnic wear that had the right touches of embellishments, fabrics and colours to suit the Indian palettes with striking headgear by Farzad Billimoria was a good start to the event.

A mix of ethnic, Red Carpet and Bridal wear, which had the first women’s Indian gun as the inspiration but did not exactly live up to it, as it resembled the regular dazzling collections seen on the ramp in the past.

There were hints of interesting silhouettes, which at times gave that déjà vu feel with the ethnic and western wear that could have been avoided.

For lovers of embroidered bridal saris, lehengas, cholis, dupattas, and lehenga-saris this was a collection that will be added to every wedding trousseau. The exquisite embroidery is the forté of the designer, which has a timeless beauty that turns the garments into treasured heirlooms.

The designer presented a safe collection for men and women with variations in embroidery but kept the creativity under firm control and did not venture into innovative territory.

Where the designer scored was with her unbelievable creativity and attention to detail and fine finish that proved that the lady had given research and design a lot of intense attention to present a collection for the thinking man and woman who wants something unconventional yet fashionable.

Beautifully crafted, the almost ethereal collection was a visual treat for the eyes that proved that the designers had done some intense research on the subject of laser cut fabrics.

The shaded print story was interesting and ran seamlessly through the collection for the western and Indian garments and could turn into good sellers for the designer who is a talent to watch out for.

There were touches of exciting silhouettes, drapes and designs but a slight control in the selection of contrast colours would have raised the designs onto a higher level.

From western to resort and bridal wear, the three genres offered were aimed at the urban dresser but did not reveal anything outstanding or unconventional in terms of design sensibilities.

Here is fashion of the pure “bread and butter” kind, which will create the right noise at the cash registers for this fashion house. Sticking to inventive prints, this brand has remained in business for over several decades and been popular with the mass market, which ranges from the young to the mature female dresser.

Playing to the popular needs of Indian fashionistas, the collection was aimed at lovers of traditional craft with limited controlled innovations in silhouettes or styles.

The collection started on a promising note with interesting design directions but the three beige/red fusion creations should have been edited out as they brought the effect of the collection a few notches down.

Intense bridal glamour, some divine embellishments, featuring traditional mirror work, pearls and crystals was the basis of the collection that brought the Pune Fashion Week 2014 to a fitting dramatic and glamorous end.
