At the recently concluded International Paper Biennial Rijswijk 2012 in Netherland, which had to be extended to 13 January, 2013 in view of the overwhelming response, artists showcased some amazing art works. One of the amazing sculptors showcased at the Museum Meermanno in Hague, Netherlands was the giant book sculptor by the Spanish artist Alicia Martin. Martin’s giant on-site sculpture is a cascade of old used books that appear to be pouring out of a window of the museum, landing inside a fence on the sidewalk..

Alicia Martin is known for her art works that she creates using old books. Three such site-specific installations using books are based in historic buildings in Madrid, such as Casa de America. These sculptures are part of her series aptly known as Biografias. These giant columns have used up over 5,000 books each that are held together by an intricate metal and mesh framework inside.

The fluttering paper gives the illusion of instability and mobility, and the books at the bottom simply lie lose for anyone to pick up or scribble on. Interestingly, the paper is left to elements of nature to yellow and age.
