UK - MF Hussain’s 2nd death anniversary and Christie’s auction

Two years and two days since MF Hussain bid adieu to this world on 9th June, 2011 in London, nine of his works were grabbed by buyers at the Christie’s auction of South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art in London that was held on 11 June, 2013. The legendry painter had earned ample success, fame and notoriety in his life time itself, which allowed him to indulge his other passions like films, even winning the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Quoted in the pre-lot text of Christie’s, Ebrahim Alkazi said this of Hussain’s works, “They are not mirrors of his thoughts, moods, and feelings; they are the very thoughts, moods and feelings themselves." So it was no surprise that Christie’s sold 9 lots of Hussain’s work, all living up to their estimated price and going beyond too.

The horses are still galloping, and two of the canvases exchanged hand. The famous four works, Peace Doves, which are the original designs for the famous mural executed for the first International Airport in New Delhi, surprisingly sold below the estimated price at £49,875. This sale at Christie’s had 74 lots comprising works of such masters as Francis Newton Souza, Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, George Keyt, Jagdish Swaminathan, Jehangir Sabavala etc, a real treasure trove that realised £4,377,100 for the auctioneer.
