stephanie-arpelSpeaking at length about her current series, Stephanie Arpels said, “Indian women inspire me. I feel that they have such spiritual power to bear their life and to find the strength to support their family.I wanted to pay tribute to the sublime beauty of these women. I admire them.  My art is a composition of women in daily life, walking, squatting, talking. What are they thinking? Where are they going? What are they expecting? What are they feeling?”

Stephanie further explained her technique, where the figures of women are dressed up with collages in different shapes, and colors. She said, “For my collages, I have selected the works of famous painters that I deeply admire,to give more importance to my Indian women. I have associated Western and Indian painters to highlight my European roots in an Indian context as I live in Delhi. It is also a way to translate my European perception of Indian traditions, as my collages represent the traditional sari.”
