A Heady Amalgam of Art & Poetry

3 mins read

New Delhi, August 2018
In a noisy city abuzz with the cacophony of high decibel marketing gigs, The Luxury Chronicle hosted an elegant evening of art and poetry over cocktails, on 17 August 2018. That it was a roaring success, and that each of our high-profile guests left rejuvenated and intellectually stimulated, was a testimony to our mantra about events – exclusive, elegant, engaging. Neelima Agrawal, MD BAU Publishing and CEO, The Luxury Chronicle, collaborated with the finest people and organizations for this endeavor.

Along with The Luxury Chronicle, this carefully curated event was co-hosted by Prithvi Fine Arts & Cultural Center, for the launch of their latest coffee-table book of art and poetry ‘Mussavir ka Khayal’ by the sangeeta-with-elainternationally celebrated artist Sangeeta Gupta. A collector’s item, the book is made of fine prints of ink drawings by the artist, on which she has hand-written the short verses of her poetry. The location played a major role in making the evening special, it being the JW Marriott New Delhi Aerocity, our venue partner and co-host for the glamorous evening. We were also celebrating the launch of their new space, The Gallery Room, especially designed for just such sessions, for book launches, poetry reading, and private corporate events. The standards of hospitality were legendary, made possible by the excellent team under Nitesh Gandhi, General Manager JW Marriott Aerocity and led by Rohit Sharma, Manager Marketing, and Communications.

The venue came alive with a galaxy of celebrated artists, Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, Kalidas Samman, British honour MBE awardees, leaders from the industry, business communities, senior bureaucrats et al congregating to celebrate the evening of poetry. The eminent artist Anjolie Ela Menon was the Chief Guest. The event rolled out with a welcome note by Nitesh Gandhi, after which Neelima Agrawal took charge of the flow of event. The evening got a sombre mood, keeping in view the sad demise of our former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee a day earlier. As an ode to this sensitive poet who devoted his poetry and life to the nation, we dedicated our event of poetry to his memory.

Neelima invited the renowned art curator and writer Sushma K Bahl to speak about the book and its author, as it is she who had written the Foreword of the book ‘Mussavir ka Khayal’. She introduced Sangeeta as a “..sensitive painter, whose mussavir-ka-khayalabstract compositions and calligraphic works are marked for spiritual philosophical layering.” Anjolie Ela Menon spoke to the audience at length. She mentioned how the book ‘Mussavir ka Khayal’ with its lyrical beauty and calligraphic poems reminded her of the Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, most of whose paintings started with calligraphy. She also complimented the new venue of Prithvi Fine Art and Cultural Center for its impeccable interiors and lighting, and akin to the galleries abroad. She spoke about the immense value of having such a venue available for artists and gatherings of like-minded people. sangeeta-gupta-with-rohit-sAnjolie Ela Menon paid the ultimate compliment for any artist, calling Sangeeta Gupta the “modern Renaissance Woman, who does so many things at the same time and does it well.” Finally Sangeeta was invited to speak with the audience, whom she mesmerised with her poetry, and also regaled them with anecdotes from her career in the Indian Revenue Service, which she went on to head as Chief Income Tax Commissioner of Delhi. Even as she recited her poems, Sangeeta kept translating them impromptu for those guests who did not understand Hindi. The interaction was so engaging and exciting, that it prompted another eminent guest, Mr.V.K.Duggal, former Governor Manipur and Mizoram, who came up to the podium to share his couplets and tales from his past association with Sangeeta Gupta.

Regaled and rejuvenated, the evening sparkled with the guests mingling anew, now as the members of a new close-knit family of like-minded lovers of the finer things in life. The bar was well equipped, the cocktails were amazing, champagne sparkled, the incredible eats from the famous Akira Back kitchen were savoured, and all this made possible only by legendary hospitality of the team at JW Marriott New Delhi Aerocity. People queued up to purchase their copy of ‘Mussavir ka Khayal’, and get it signed by the author herself.
