Earthsongs From Japan, a landmark exhibition by internationally acclaimed Japanese artist Kumagai Minoru, will open at Kalamkaar, Bikaner House from 25 February to 1 March 2026. Curated by Uma Nair and presented by LIVNGO Hospitality LLP, the exhibition marks the artist’s first solo presentation in India, showcasing a significant suite of paintings on paper rooted in Japanese aesthetics and philosophy.

Born in Kyoto in 1941, Kumagai studied Japanese painting at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts before evolving into a designer and globally exhibited artist. Decades of travel and artistic exploration have shaped his distinctive visual language, reflecting humanity’s enduring relationship with nature.

The exhibition brings together 50 works capturing ephemeral moments, natural light and shifting perspectives, forming poetic meditations on the interdependence between human existence and the natural world.

Kumagai’s “Saihaku” technique

Central to Kumagai’s practice is his self-developed artistic language, “Saihaku,” which integrates tradition and contemporary experimentation through:

  • Gold, silver, coloured and holographic foils as foundational surfaces
  • Traditional Japanese pigments
  • Acrylic paints

By layering pigments and acrylics over foil bases, Kumagai creates luminous compositions emphasising texture, brilliance and depth. As the artist notes, while respecting traditional Japanese painting methods, he employs innovative techniques and varied foil materials to establish a new Saihaku style.

Artistic language and curatorial perspective

Kumagai’s works present a quiet, fluid aesthetic centred on nature’s subtle presence and spiritual resonance. Each composition explores balance, harmony and the symbolic rhythms of the natural world, positioning the viewer as both observer and participant in nature’s continuum.

Curator Uma Nair observes that Kumagai reinterprets landscape traditions through modern abstract expressionist approaches interwoven with Impressionist sensibilities. His compositions often juxtapose defined mountain vistas with mist-laden backgrounds, creating layered spatial dialogues between the real and the imagined. Rich colour gradations—ranging from deep reds and russets to moss greens and blues—combine with brushwork, smudging and cross-hatched line structures to generate atmospheric landscapes informed by calligraphic traditions and global artistic influences.
