The Ritz-Carlton, Bangalore, recently hosted an exclusive performance by the 30-member Youth Jazz Orchestra Baden-Württemberg in the hotel’s majestic ballroom. Over 200 guests attended the show. Highlights of the evening included a breathtaking performance by a German vocalist’s rendition of songs in Japanese, a virtuoso solo saxophonist, an exhilarating “scat singing” session. Scat singing or scatting is a form of vocal improvisation in jazz music where the singers improvise riffs or repeated melodic patterns in a jazz song using vocables or sounds, scat syllables that serve as synonyms for recognizable words, like “uh-huh” for “yes,” or nonsense syllables.
