India – One Women’s ‘DAY’ not enough, need for Women’s Week / Fortnight / Month

New Delhi
March, 2021

On 8th March each year, the date of International Women’s Day, the city erupts in a frenzy of events, all focused on women. It is a big business promotion opportunity for the women centric brands like jewellery, skin care, cosmetics, spa, beauty salons, apparel brands, restaurants, and the many event companies that reap rich dividends with heavily sponsored Women’s Day Award functions. This tokenism is a fabulous marketing opportunity for the concerned brands  much bigger than a Valentine’s Day, and it can be best utilised if it lasts an entire week, or two weeks or even a month. All in all, quite insulting that the ‘female’ of the entire Homo Sapien species is being celebrated for just one day. How many functions can you organise or attend in one day really? Should the women rally around for an on-ground protest in demand for a Women’s Week, there will be no dearth of sponsors.

The art galleries are getting it right, showcasing women artists, with exhibitions open for many days. Some of the noteworthy events around the city were the art shows, though their inaugurations overlapped. The Lalit Kala Akademi or National Academy of Art organised ‘Akshaya Patra’ exhibition of artworks by national and international women artists from the various states of India, France, UK, Mexico, USA, Spain, Vietnam etc,  at Rabindra Bhavan, Ferozshah Road, which will be on from 8 – 20 March, 2021. The event was inagurated by Shri Prahlad Singh Patel, Hon’ble Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Govt of India, who also took the time to meet the artists. The National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) hosted an exhibition ‘Yatr Naryastu’ highlighting the role of women in India’s history, and a two-day art workshop from 7-8 March, 2021. The World University of Design, which has been actively promoting artists on a regular basis, inaugurated the exhibition ‘Yajnaseni’, held at RKG Art & Culture Center, New Friends Colony, New Delhi. Inaugurated by Mr Dinesh K Patnaik, Director General of ICCR, the showcase is on from 8-12 March, 2021. Prithvi Fine Art and Cultural Center, Safdarjang Enclave, New Delhi, run by the well-known poet and artist Sangeeta Gupta, hosted the exhibiton ‘Empowered Women’, scheduled for a month from 8 March to 7 April, 2021. The event was inaugrated by eminent artist Dr Anjolie Ela Menon on 8 March, 2021.

Zoya, Titan’s luxury jewelry brand, hosted a tea party at the Taj Palace tea lounge, in keeping with their tradition of connecting with their patrons.
