The much-awaited exhibition of the works of French artist Stéphanie Arpels is taking place at Torino’s MIIT – Museo Internazionale Italia Arte of modern and contemporary art, from 9 – 22 November 2024. With this solo exhibition, ENTRE DEUX MONDES (IN BETWEEN WORLDS), Arpels takes forward her interrupted journey as she moved from India to Italy.
Speaking about the theme of her canvases, ‘Entre Deux Mondes (In Between Worlds)’, Stéphanie said, “There is always something that escapes us in the whole of things. That is why, with my new exhibition, I want to express the elusive. Through my art, I try to reveal the visible and the invisible: This has resulted in the inspiration of my two main series – My Women and My Paths – which have evolved over the last 15 years, as my own path has led me from France to India and to Italy.”
Artist Stéphanie’s last solo show was held in New Delhi, just before the world shutdown due to the pandemic. She then had to move to Italy after having spent six years in India.
‘How has this new chapter in your life impacted your art?’, we asked.
Arpels said, “An inner spiritual awakening has progressively taken over my work. I wonder about the present and the future, about that which can be seen and the unknown, about paths through life and towards an afterlife. Being influenced by the way the light reflects on my surrounding paths, nearby hills and mountains, I explore texture and play with light to introduce new shades to my two series”.
Not impervious to personal loss and tragedies, Artist Stéphanie shared, “As my work continues to evolve, I pay tribute to my mother who passed in 2023 with the introduction of bright colours, her colours. Lately, the shapes my paths take are rounder and want to burst forth from my canvas like fireworks; a way to tell myself a new story; a way of traveling in the visible and invisible world. What is our final destination?”
While in India Stéphanie Arpels had held several solo and group shows, where she showed alongside renowned masters at prestigious galleries. A sensitive artist, her canvases reflected the new world she discovered as she travelled across the varied landscapes of India, adding to the intrinsic spiritual quest within her. Her time in Italy adds another dimension to her canvas.
The theme of her upcoming solo resonates -‘In Between Worlds’.
