Vadehra Art Gallery presents a travelling exhibition of forty significant works of Artist Jogen Chowdhury (b.1939), from the collection of the Glenbarra Art Museum, Himeji, Japan. The collection traces the artist’s career from the 1960s when he was a student in Paris, until 2005. The exhibition comes to New Delhi after a showcase in Kolkata in November 2019 and Mumbai in January 2020. It is now in New Delhi from 4 September – 1 October 2020. This exhibition spans four decades of works by Jogen Chowdhury. The display comprises of works on paper, with ink and pastels, the preferred medium of the artist. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to view a major body of works by the renowned artist, the earliest being from 1965. Most of these works have never been exhibited in New Delhi.

The Glenbarra Art Museum was established in 1990 to house the extensive collection of Modern and Contemporary Indian art built by Masanori Fukuoka over his several visits to India. What had started out as a comprehensive collection gradually distilled itself over the years as he identified his primary areas of interest. The Museum’s collection of works by Jogen Chowdhury is one of the most extensive in private hands and offers a unique opportunity of viewing works across several mediums and periods in the artist’s career, ranging from early drawings to detailed works in his signature cross-hatch style as well as the rarer to find canvases. Earlier this year, this Glenbarra Collection was relocated to a newly designed stand-alone museum built by Kawazoe Junichiro. In 2005 the Glenbarra Art Museum published a book, ‘JOGEN CHOWDHURY: Enigmatic Visions’, on the works of the artist from the museum’s collection. Masanori Fukuoka, the man behind this collection has been an important contributor and supporter of Indian art and artists since 1989. He established the Glenbarra Art Museum in 1990, which houses modern and contemporary Indian Art.
