‘Doubt: A Parable’, the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play by Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, was staged on September 4th and 5th, 2025, at Stein Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The production was presented by Katyayani in collaboration with Delhi’s oldest theatre group, Three Arts Club.

Directed by Sohaila Kapur and produced by Anuradha Dar, the show featured a stellar cast including Sanjiv Desai, Kavita Seth, Arti Nayar, and Kritika Bhatia. The performances received standing ovations from packed audiences across age groups.

Set in a Catholic church during 1960s America, amidst the civil rights movement, Doubt explores themes of suspicion, faith, and moral certainty. When a priest is accused of misconduct with a young boy, an unyielding nun takes it upon herself to seek the truth—raising powerful questions that Shanley leaves for the audience to decide.

In Kapur’s words: “After Anand Hi Anand, which celebrated relationships, I wanted to explore another layer—the role of suspicion and uncertainty in human bonds. Doubt is a mirror that reflects our insecurities and forces us to ask—do we really know the truth, or only what we choose to believe?”

Staged under a special license from CAA (Shanley’s agents), the production was mounted for two exclusive shows in Delhi.

The event also marked a notable collaboration between Katyayani and Three Arts Club—founded in Shimla in 1943 and now celebrating over 80 years of pioneering theatre. Revived in 2008, the Club continues its legacy of inclusive, socially relevant storytelling, partnering with Katyayani to bring powerful plays, walking art, and workshops to Delhi audiences.
